By tapping specific points of the energy meridians whilst focusing on the problem, emotion or sensation in the body, we can free the traumatic memory, allowing the body and mind to heal itself.

The therapy has its roots in Acupuncture and Shiatsu (Japanese acupressure) with links to subsequent western approaches such as Applied Kinesiology (1964) and Behavioural Kinesiology in the 1970s, all of which contributed to the development of Thought Field Therapy (TFT) by psychologist Dr. Roger Callaghan in 1979. TFT is a complex and therefore specialised therapy, requiring specific algorithms for specific problems or ailments. However, in 1997, Gary Craig, Harvard Engineer and one of Callaghan’s TFT students refined the therapy into the sublimely simple Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), using a consistent pattern of tapping points to address all issues and conditions. In doing so he made this extraordinary self-healing tool accessible to everyone. Even children love to use EFT tapping – and often remind their parents to use it too!

EFT borrows questioning and reframing techniques from Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), which was developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grindler and has much in common with talking therapies such as counselling and CBT.
